where the wild things are.

April 27, 2009 · Leave a Comment

i can never get myself to post on weekends anymore. fail. anyway. i remember reading “where the wild things are” when i was kid but for the life of me, i can barely remember the plot. i just remember liking the book and that all my other friends liked it too. here’s the synopsis courtesy of its wiki page for those of you who’ve never heard of it or read it as a kid [although to be honest, if you haven't, you must've been living under a rock as a child]:

The book tells the story of Max, who one evening plays around his home, “making mischief” in a wolf costume by chasing the dog with a fork and growling at his mom. As punishment, his mother sends him to bed without supper. In his room, a mysterious, wild forest grows out of his imagination, and Max journeys to the land of the Wild Things. The Wild Things are fearsome-looking monsters, but Max conquers them “by staring into their yellow eyes without blinking once,” and he is made “the King of all Wild Things.” However, he soon finds himself lonely and homesick, and he returns home to his bedroom, where he finds his supper waiting for him, still hot.

it was a really short story. only 10 sentences [according to its wiki page]! but of course hollywood found some way to stretch it into a 90+ minute movie. while i am always wary of book-into-movie adaptations, this trailer looks pretty damn good!:

i’ll admit, when i saw max in his white wolf suit, that made me smile. definitely bringing back childhood memories! the movie isn’t coming out until october 19th, 2009 but i’m already anticipating its release!

brand new colony.

April 18, 2009 · Leave a Comment

so the death cab for cutie concert i went to last night with blee definitely reignited my love for ben gibbard and his voice. there’s something almost melancholy/soulful about it.

anyway, i bring this up because i actually kind of got into ben gibbard’s other project, the postal service, first before i started listening to death cab for cutie. the first song i listened to by postal service was, ‘brand new colony’ which i think is still my favorite song of theirs to this day:

i especially love the beginning with its ‘mario’ beeping noises. haha. awesome.

a lot of the time i don’t necessarily listen to the lyrics of songs. well, i do and i don’t. okay, that probably made no sense. ANYWAY. the reason for bringing that up is because i actually like the lyrics of ‘brand new colony.’ there’s something sweet and quirky to them that i really dig. listen, you’ll see what i mean. or not.

anyway. check out BOTH death cab and postal service. ben gibbard will draw you in with his wistful voice.

i will most likely be posting more death cab/postal service in the future so yay. :]

however, i do love tights! black tights. purple tights. yellow tights. you name it. i love them all.

sooo jocey sent me a link to where there were quite a few interesting-looking tights. all kinds of textures and colors and patterns. awesome! some of my favorites:

Falke Sheer Wrap Detail Tights, $30.

american apparel also has opaque two-color pantyhose that are $16. they come in black/white, fluorescent yellow/coral [zomg], etc.

for some reason their pictures won’t show up when i try to post them though. DAMN YOU AMERICAN APPAREL.

while i don’t necessarily like american apparel for certain reasons, i can’t deny that their selection of tights is pretty awesome.

anyway. can’t wait for spring/summer to finally come around so i can break out the tights! hooray!

charlie the unicorn.

April 13, 2009 · Leave a Comment

ah yes, charlie the unicorn. you know, i’ll be honest, when i first saw the 1st episode, i wasn’t all that impressed. it just didn’t seem funny to me. but upon watching it for the second time a while after, i thought it was the most hilarious thing ever. maybe it’s just one of those things you need to see a few times before the funny-ness really sinks in. like a top 40 billboard song. it’s not all that great the first time you hear it. but after repeat hearings, you think it’s the best song ever. so here i give you, ‘charlie the unicorn, episode 1.’

and episode 2:

and the all-new, episode 3:

i definitely think when you need cheering up and/or something mindless to watch or whatever, the charlie the unicorn series is good for that. i also think that it’s probably something that’s infinitely better if you watch it while you’re high as a kite. but that’s just speculation. cause i mean, c’mon, you know some stoner probably thought this up while high and thought it was the funniest thing ever but in reality it’s not that funny.

just sayin’.

p.s. surprisingly, charlie the unicorn does not have its own wikipedia page. wtf.

so, not gonna lie, i really wanna see this movie:

does that not look so totally amazing/cute? pixar has done it again!

plot (courtesy of its wiki page):

Carl Fredricksen (Edward Asner) is a retired 78-year-old balloon salesman. When Carl was a child, he met and eventually married a girl named Ellie who grew up in a small midwestern town. Ellie always dreamed of visiting South America, but she died before she got a chance. Now, when developers threaten to move him into an assisted living home, Carl decides to fulfill his promise to Ellie. To accomplish this, he uses a huge number of balloons to make the house fly – but unwittingly takes a chubby eight-year-old Wilderness Explorer named Russell with him. The two opposites match up for thrilling adventures as they encounter wild terrain, unexpected foes, and all the terrifying creatures that wait in the jungle.

and omg, one of the main characters is asian! and he’s cute! and likeable! and non-stereotypical!

deep font challenge.

April 7, 2009 · Leave a Comment

it’s been a good few days since my last post – sorry! i know i’ve kind of been lagging and the days between posts are getting greater and greater. ack! got too caught up with school and non-school related stuff….

this past weekend was maasu which was really, really great. the conference itself went fairly smoothly [at least i thought so] and the group dynamic of the uic-ers was really fun. this was my third maasu and my last one as a student! SAD DAY. perhaps i’ll write an entry about it later on. i haven’t quite decided how ‘personal’ i want to make this blog yet we’ll see.

so anyway! back to popular culture randomness. i think i was being a creeper and saw this on vicky and brandon’s facebook wall-to-wall and decided to check it out myself:

the deep font challenge.

the deep font challenge.

[bee tee dubs, i felt it was important to note for myself that i finally figured out how to use the print screen function on the keyboard - yay! :D ]

this is the deep font challenge. essentially, you are shown examples of two different fonts. the game will ask you to identify which font is comic sans, for example, and you have to figure out which example given to you is comic sans.

your score is determined by how fast you can ’shoot’ the correct one. i haven’t gotten very far but it seems like the next level asks you to shoot the examples that aren’t a certain font.

it’s pretty interesting! [at least i think it is]. check it out!

reese witherspoon on ellen.

April 2, 2009 · Leave a Comment

so i don’t watch the ellen show regularly, but every now and then i’ll catch a youtube clip of it or whatever. and reese witherspoon was on the show very recently and they were talking about how i guess reese feels like she’s really bad at award show acceptance speeches. so ellen decided to help her write a speech by using madlibs and it turned out to be pretty funny!:

reese is so cute!
